●Introduction
YED Director Issac Wu, vice directors Joyce Chen, Sammy Wu and Mr. Ricky Lam shared very meaningful and nice lunch together in Robert Black College Dining. We learned about Mr. Lam's fruitful career life in professional services, internal control and logistics. Besides, the life of Mr. Lam is very colorful in sports and lifelong learning. Let's firstly review by our director Issac: Mr. Lam is a model professional, with integrity and team spirit toward different kinds of jobs. He always encourages the younger to be patient and don't hesitate to treasure the time being with your family.
A gentleman who is willing to share with students
Mr. Lam said that when he was a student, his study was supported by a medical scholarship. Dr. Chan who offered him the scholarship told him that he wanted to support him so that he can stand on the shoulders of him to get further.
The wisdom of management
After graduation, Mr. Lam came to an audit firm. Then he started his management trip in logistics industry. He has worked for several logistics companies by now. When he joined in a new company, he often faced with different kinds of difficulties. He ever came to an enterprise that had no accounting system and need to be established all from beginning. With a lot of stress and difficult, Mr. Lam treated this task as a wood and the process as a carving procedure. Besides this challenge, he also faced a different one in another company. In 1990s, his company wanted him to apply ISO without any consulting service. Although there is no experience, Mr. Lam built a complete internal control system and fulfilled this work successfully.
He summarized that there are two things we need to keep in mind when we are in work. One is looking before you sign and another is looking before you approve. No matter what position you are in, you should always think why you should do it and how to protect yourself.
Networking
Mr. Lam pointed out the necessity of networking in university. Students in university need to have a balance between study and social network. Besides studying, networking is also important for personal development. He added that your boss does not expect that you know everything, but at least have common senses. Those common senses are what we can get from communication with people from different backgrounds. He also advised to be self-confident while talking with strangers.
Balance between work and life
Even though busy with work, Mr. Lam still has many hobbies and interests. He likes challenging himself and learning new things, for example, he got his taxi driving license and Yacht driving license. Meeting and falling in love in university, Mr. Lam and his wife love and support each other. Both of them treat work seriously and have a balanced life. Mr. Lam is having a romantic love life with his wife and being a good father.
Keep learning and managing time efficiently are important factors for success. “Always making schedules and once setting up a goal, there is no power which can stop you.” He said.
After interviewing with Mr. Lam, we have learned a lot. We have a better understanding of study, career and life, which can provide experience for students in HKU and other universities to fight for our bright future.
